Investigating the Idea of Video Editing

Video editing is a way of organizing videos to make them clearer and run more smoothly. Some of the basic strategies of video editing are inserting clips from different videos and cutting extra clips to make videos shorter. Some other ways of editing videos include changing the sound, making either louder are quieter. This is a good way to make videos more enjoyable for a specific audience. Some of the more common tools people use to edit videos are Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro and iMovie. Many youtubers use these platforms and when watching some of the videos you can see the when some parts of the footage are cut out or how the transitions are done.

As a Career, Video Editing is in high demand for across multiple industries. A content developer uses video editing as a way to help promote or for entertainment purposes. A film editor helps organize film footage by putting together multiple clips in a certain order. A multimedia designer manipulated images and videos by making up ideas to create audio or video footage. Many of these careers require expertise in video editing.

I will be conducting a mentoring interview about video editing. My interviewee Elisha, is passionate about video editing because he uses that idea to make arguments and share it with other people. Elisha’s hobby is to make sports videos and post them on social media to share his thoughts. This interview occurred through phone use and held on Saturday from 7pm to 7:30.

The Interview

AJ: What types of videos do you like to watch?

EG: I like to watch sports videos, mainly NBA and NFL games or highlights

AJ: What made you like video editing?

EG: It all started with me wanting to make my own videos, particularly regarding sports highlights. I would talk about different players performances in a game or make a comparison video, like a sports analyst.

AJ: What was the first video you made?

EG: The first video I made was on Instagram and I was analyzing my favorite NBA team which is the golden state warriors. This was before I even had the camera set up but I was revealing highlights saying why I believe the Warriors are good contenders for winning the championship.

AJ: How did you edit that video since this was before you had the camera set up?

EG: Well, I would put clips of basketball highlights and I would be talking in the background to add on to the clips I chose

AJ: While getting into editing videos, what were some obstacles you had?

EG: Simply figuring out parts that I should cut or keep in a video. For Example, in a video I made, if I’m not talking at all for a long time, I would make sure to cut parts out so the video can flow better. So, I would go over the whole video, find any parts to add on or see if there are any unnecessary parts for me to cut out. That is pretty much the long part about doing these videos.

AJ: What in particular do you use to edit your videos?

EG: Well, there is this app I used called Adobe Premiere and with it, I pretty much do whatever I want with the videos I made. There are options for me to cut parts of the footage out or to add footage from a different video. Once I got used to it, it became fairly easy for me. I also figured out that youtubers and people that stream on Twitch also use the Adobe platform to edit the videos they make so that’s why I decided to start with that and overall, it was really helpful. If anyone wants to learn how to edit videos, I would recommend using that.

AJ: What got you into making and editing videos and how challenging was it?

EG: What got me into making and editing videos was that I would also have a lot of debates with my friends between who’s better between this player and the next. So, one day I decided to have a recording of me talking about different sports teams along with the players. Then once I am done, I would start doing the editing part. Once that part was done I would have it posted on a separate Instagram account that is strictly sports related. After all that I kind of liked the idea of making these types of videos so I decided to think others to make. It wasn’t very challenging, though editing the videos can take some time but once I kept making more videos it all became very much easy for me.

AJ: Do you plan on having a career based on video editing?

EG: As of right now I’m not very sure, though I am interesting careers based on computer skills and since videos are computer based, I would rather continue that direction

As a result, of this interview I have realized that video editing is a unique hobby and career path. In particular, with video editing people must understand multiple ways to work with computers and requires a good amount of creativity. I find this interview a success because I have learned a few new aspects about video editing such as what platforms can help me make and edit videos along with the steps it would take.
